About Street Children The life of a street child in the cities of Africa is harsh. But many people in those cities don't realize how many street children there are amongst them. They assume that the shoe-shine boys, the gutter cleaners, the street barbers, the girl porters in the markets and the girls selling water are simply the children of poor families from the slums or shanty towns. In fact many of them have left their families in their home villages to come to the city. They live on the streets. As the numbers of street children rise, so too will their problems. There will be more children competing for the few sources of income that are available. Without help, their prospects will be very bleak. And being so many, they will not be able to be ignored any longer.

The governments of the African nations do not have enough money to spend on these social issues. And the aid programs of the Western World tend to neglect them too, concentrating on larger economic projects. This is where EVI the Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in Africa can help.
